In 2019, the LGMA programs in California and Arizona, along with our partners at Western Growers, put together a robust new process to completely review all areas of the LGMA food safety practices in order to ensure that they reflect the most current science and are responsive to current issues.

In the wake of recent foodborne illness outbreaks linked to produce items like leafy greens, food retailers and wholesalers continue to prioritize the health and safety of their customers. The FMI recently issued its Food Safety Priorities for 2020.

We applaud the thorough review conducted by this organization to provide their membership with the most updated information possible. The LGMA is in agreement that more needs to be done and we value our continued relationship with this organization.
As public health agencies last week called an end to the latest e. Coli outbreaks linked to romaine lettuce from Salinas, the leafy greens community, government regulators and the entire produce industry continue efforts on multiple fronts to prevent future outbreaks.
The U.S. CDC and FDA have declared e. Coli outbreaks associated with romaine lettuce grown in the Salinas, CA region over and the agencies have lifted the consumer advisory. In a statement, the FDA said there is no longer a need for consumers to avoid romaine lettuce from Salinas. Since the consumer advisory was first issued on November 21, 2019 California leafy greens farmers have taken action to prevent future outbreaks.
As people and organizations throughout the produce industry say goodbye to Bob Whitaker, who announced he will be retiring at the end of the year, the LGMA would be remiss if we didn’t recognize his many years of dedicated service in our own way. And so, during a reception at this year’s Produce Marketing Association Fresh Summit, we presented Bob with our highest honor – the LGMA’s Golden Checkmark Award.
