2025 California LGMA Metrics / Food Safety Standards

In August, 2024 the California LGMA Advisory approved several changes to the required food safety standards - also called metrics. Below is an outline of the changes:

Minor changes to Agricultural Water Requirements

California and Arizona LGMA’s Technical Committees reviewed their metrics to ensure alignment with FDA’s Water Rule which was issued this June.

More Impactful Changes to Harvest Equipment Cleaning and Sanitation
  • New glossary and updated glossary terms
  • Training requirements added
  • New assessment and verification requirements
    • Sanitation program assessments
    • Conducting a hygienic design review
    • Numerical verification of cleaning performance (i.e. ATP and or microbiological testing)
  • New requirements for Harvesting Equipment Cleaning and Sanitation SSOPs
  • The updated version of the metrics can be viewed here >
  • The audit checklist will be updated later this winter.
  • Audits verifying the updated metrics/food safety standards will begin in May of 2025.
  • The LGMA will provide outreach and training on the new metrics at the end of 2024 and in the spring of 2025.
