LGMA Smarter Audits
Effective April 2025, the California LGMA is pleased to launch its Smarter Audits Program. In 2022, the California LGMA began a comprehensive review of the LGMA audits to ensure they are risk-based, effective and focused on the most critical elements.
- After 18 years it was time to take a strategic look at the audit checklist instead of continually adding to it.
- In 2024 a full-scope LGMA audit could include up to 20 hours of work and over 600 checkpoints.
Smarter Audit Checklists
As a result of this audit review, California LGMA will now use 5 different audit checklists to verify that its members are in compliance with the LGMA food safety standards / metrics).
Smarter Audit Frequency / Schedule
Starting in April 2025 each California LGMA member will receive a minimum of 3 audits per active period.
- Full Scope Audit
Uses System Document Checklist and Field Checklist - Scheduled Field Audit*
Uses Field Checklist, can also use Pre-Harvest Checklist or Post-Harvest Checklist
*Can consist of up to 3 checklists and include up to 3 growers. At least 1 of the growers must be audited against the Field Checklist. If additional growers are audited it can be any of the 3 checklists.) - Unannounced Audit

Smarter Audit Policies
